Doula Support

Are you interested in hiring a doula? What if I told you you could work with me at a reduced rate? I am currently completing my doula certification and I am seeking to support three more birthing families to fulfill the final requirement. During this time, I am offering affordable doula services at a reduced rate.

If you are open to having a doula in training attend your birth, I'd be honoured to walk this journey with you. I work with family in and around Leiden.

But what is a doula?

A doula is an unbiased, non-medical professional who provides emotional, physical, and educational support before, during, and after birth. The doula’s purpose is to support the birthing person to have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience.

A doula is for every family and every type of birth. I help you prepare, as a family, for the arrival of this new baby.

Why have a doula?

Research has found that continuous support during childbirth decreases the risk of induction, epidural, use of forceps/vacuum, and caesarean birth. The birth experience is also most likely to be seen as a positive one. In the long term, it also leads to improved success with breastfeeding, easier bonding with the baby, and reduced postnatal depression.

While we stretch and practice breathing exercises for relaxation, we also do strengthening postures during our prenatal yoga class. We work the muscles of the glutes, legs, back, and even the core to support better posture and alignment during pregnancy and to help prepare the body for labour.

During pregnancy, as your baby is growing, your diaphragm is moving up, decreasing lung functional capacity up to 30%.

Side stretches during prenatal yoga, encourage you to explore how you can direct your breath to the side and the back of the rib cage, and create more space for the expending rib cage.

Do you know how to make the difference between practice contractions and early labour contractions? These few differences can help you!

Prenatal yoga is a great way to relieve common pains and aches of pregnancy!

Gentle stretches help to relieve tension and to improve circulation. It also helps to maintain a good posture during pregnancy.

While breastfeeding can delay your period after childbirth, you will ovulate before your first postpartum period. Be aware that getting pregnant while breastfeeding is possible.

Don’t hesitate to discuss this topic with your midwife.

Lights, candles, mats, props, music, tea, everything is ready for your prenatal yoga classes at @tenzinyoga!

During your birth, you want to be fully immersed in your bubble, ideally in a dark environment, surrounded by sounds and smells that you enjoy. This helps oxytocin flow, while minimizing adrenaline and stress.

Before labour, think about what you can use to create your own space, and communicate your preferences with your partner and your birth team.

You can apply all these tips to a home birth and a hospital birth.

During postnatal yoga classes, we give special attention to the pelvic floor muscles, both to strengthen and relax them after childbirth. Through breathing and relaxation, you also relearn to control these muscles. If the problem lasts, re-education with a pelvic floor therapist might be necessary.

In prenatal yoga, we practice gentle open twists as it can help relieve tension in the back.
In pregnancy, more than ever, it's important to listen to your body and only do what feels good for you.

For many, strong twists might not feel like a good option during pregnancy. It might be best to avoid twists that compress the belly altogether.

Here is a quick overview of what we cover together during childbirth education classes.

Have you read all the books? You feel ready and don’t see the need for a childbirth education class?

Childbirth education classes are just as much for the partner as they are for the birthing person. It will teach them about the different stages of labour and how they can support you as best they can.

The estimated due date is based on the date of your last menstrual period, but it is far from being an exact science. Your baby can arrive a few weeks before or a few weeks later.

Was your baby born on its due date?

Did you know that you don't have to lie on your back to give birth?
If you practice squatting, hip circles, rocking lunges, and any other position you might use in labour during your pregnancy, it will feel familiar and natural.

We practice these positions in our prenatal yoga class. Join us for in-studio classes in Leiden, or get in touch for private classes.

In movies, labour often starts with the water breaking, the woman screaming, and the baby being born after a couple of pushes.
Do you know that labour only starts with a spontaneous rupture of membranes for only about 10% of women?

Learn to recognise the other signs of labour starting and to differentiate false labour from the real thing!

Prenatal yoga can help you with the aches and pains of pregnancy and prepare your body for labour. It's also a great way to meet other like-minded pregnant women and build a community.

Prenatal yoga is a great activity to practice during your pregnancy, not only for its physical benefits, but also to connect with other pregnant women and share your experiences.
If you are an experienced yoga practitioner, you might find similarities with your traditional vinyasa or hatha yoga class. Still, you will also find new specificities, like the emphasis put on the pelvic floor and the tips for labour.

I’m Apolline. I’m French and I have lived in the Netherlands for the past 6 years.
I started yoga at university and it quickly became an important part of my life. After practising on and off for years, I wanted to deepen my practice and I completed by 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, India. Quickly after, I did my prenatal and postnatal yoga teacher training.
At the same time, I started my doula training. I’ve started this journey because I care deeply about supporting people through pregnancy, birth, and the early days of parenthood.
